Popeye Pedal

More info to come sThe St. Nicholas Brewing Company and St. Nicholas Brewing Company Cycling Team cordially invites area bicyclists to participate in their 1st official Popeye Pedal Bicycle Ride taking place Sunday August 8 which happens to be the final day of the 2019 Popeye Picnic in Chester.

The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Chester St. Nicholas Landmark located at 111 Ferry St. in Chester, Illinois. Interested bicycle riders are welcome to organize on the Landmark parking lot prior to start time and get acquainted with fellow riders.

One of the key organizers of the event is Tom Welge of Chester who said, "We are offering two courses for this first Popeye Pedal Bicycle Ride. There is one course for casual and novice riders and another for more advanced riders."

"The first course, which is suitable for cyclists of almost any level, will be a 12-mile course which starts at the St. Nicholas Landmark and goes to the Pierre Menard home then returns to the Landmark.

"The second course, suitable for only more seasoned cyclists, is a beautiful and challenging 52-mile course with 2100 feet of climbing that winds through the northwestern side of Randolph County along the bluffs and river bottoms before returning to St. Nicholas Brewing Company in Chester."

Welge wants potential riders to understand that the ride is conducted on roads that are on low traffic, however these are public roads. Very young riders or riders not comfortable riding closely alongside other bicyclists and/or motorized vehicles, should not participate!

Welge said, "There will be some limited support available on the 12-mile course, but riders on the 52-mile ride should consider this event to be ‘self-supported’ and come prepared to deal with any issues you might experience on the road!"

There is no charge to participate in the inaugural ride this year! Each and every cyclist must, however sign a waiver and wear a helmet.

Everyone who participates in the ride and finishes their chosen course will receive a FREE gift card worth $5.00. This coupon can be used ONLY the day of the ride at the St. Nicholas Landmark in Chester for either food or drink. Several door prizes will also be given out following the ride.

To register for the ride, participants can go online at https://www.popeyepicnic.com. Preregistration can also be completed in person at the Landmark prior to the ride. Finally, cyclists can sign up on the morning of the ride at the Landmark on Sunday September 8th.

The inaugural Popeye Pedal is an event which is one of many events that are part of the 2019 Popeye Picnic in Chester. Chester is the home of Elsea Segar, the creator of the Popeye cartoon. The Popeye Picnic takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday September 6th, 7th, and 8th.

Tour de Donut

Tour de Donut

The Tour de Donut bicycle race is a spoof of the "Tour de France." The "race" starts with a mass start and is led/paced to the boundary of Staunton, IL by the Staunton Police.  The route has varied slightly from year-to-year due to road conditions/construction and is over rolling terrain with two donut stops. Riders must stop at the two checkpoint stations (donut stops). Donut consumption is not mandatory,  however, a five minute bonus is awarded for each donut consumed and recorded.  After the race placement awards are presented by category for best Elapsed Time, Adjusted Time and Most Donuts Eaten.  Door/Attendance prizes and grand prizes are also awarded.

The Tour was originated by the Mid-America Bicycle Club and was inherited by the McDonnell Douglas Employee Bicycle Club which shortly thereafter became the Boeing Employee Bicycle Club (St. Louis).  The Tour de Donut is normally held on the 2nd Saturday of July - so that it occurs during the Tour de France.  Due to the nature and popularity of the event,  race day registration was discontinued a couple of years ago.  Registration has been via this web site and word-of-mouth. After 2007 we use a true web based registration that will be able to handle charge card payments and release forms without the need to print and mail (aka snail mail).

The start/finish of the Tour de Donut was originally at Staunton High School, later it moved to the Elementary School next door.  In 2004 the start/finish moved to Staunton City Park. This location gives us more room to spread out and more parking area.  Race number pick-up opens at 7:00AM CDT with the mass start (competitive riders first, then recreational rider immediately thereafter) at 9:00AM CDT, to facilitate the prize/awards the race timing officially ends at 12:00/noon CDT and award ceremony at 12:30PM CDT.
